Proposed Rule for Future Conditions Hydrology Published

The purpose of the proposed rule is to revise the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) regulations to include definitions for future conditions hydrology and for the floodplains that may be shown on Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs), for informational purposes at the request of a community, to reflect future conditions hydrology; and to establish the zone symbol to be used to identify future conditions flood hazard areas on the FIRMs. Follow the links above to learn more about the proposed rule, or to view the report "Modernizing Fema's Flood Hazard Mapping Program: Recommendations For Using Future Conditions Hydrology For The National Flood Insurance Program". http://www.fema.gov/plan/prevent/fhm/frm_fchy.shtm.

New HEC-RAS Use Policy

The Hydrologic Engineering Center of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has released the River Analysis System, HEC-RAS, to replace the HEC-2 hydraulic model. It is a completely new piece of software - in fact, none of the hydraulic routines from HEC-2 were used in the HEC-RAS software. A memorandum addressing the policy for the use of HEC-RAS to replace HEC-2 models for flood hazard mapping in the NFIP is available on the FHM web site.

Obtain Guidance Regarding the Recent Changes to Part 65 of the NFIP Regulations

Certain regulations regarding data requirements and procedures for obtaining Letters of Map Revision base on Fill (LOMR-F) and Letters of Map Revision (LOMRs) have changed (as of May 4, 2001). Flood Protection Restored for Parts of Five Communities in California

Learn more about the recently issued LOMR for five communities in California. As a result of the completion of restoration work on a portion of the Los Angeles River flood protection system, flood zones have been removed from parts of five communities along the Rio Hondo Channel, including Downey, Pico Rivera, South Gate, Paramount, and Montebello.
