Issue No. 9
The purpose of the Coastal Hazard Mailing List is to provide up-to-date coastal flood hazard information pertinent to the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the National Flood Insurance Program. Subscribers will receive new mailings on a monthly basis.
The list presented below identifies some of the major recurring conferences which, in whole or in part, address coastal hazards. Both upcoming and recently-held conferences are presented so that the list can continued to be used as a 'template' in future years, assuming conferences will be held on a recurring basis.

FEMA is presently developing the CHAMP Tutorial, which is an instructive, self-paced tutorial to help users better understand CHAMP modeling, importing digital data, and generating summary graphics and tables. This tutorial will be available for download from the Online Tutorials main page at: http://www.fema.gov/plan/prevent/fhm/ot_main.shtm in late January-early February 2002. Remember to check the website to improve your CHAMP modeling capabilities.
An operational error has been identified in CHAMP Version 1.0 concerning a component of the WHAFIS model. This operational error will be corrected in Version 1.1 of CHAMP which will be available from FEMA's website at: http://www.fema.gov/plan/prevent/fhm/dl_champ.shtm by the end of January 2002. In the meantime, CHAMP users should follow the instructions below to correctly use the CHAMP WHAFIS module.
When entering card information in the 'WHAFIS Card' column of the 'WHAFIS Program' window in CHAMP, the user must select a VH card to model vegetation for marsh grass. The 'MG' button, located in the lower right-hand corner of the 'VH Card window,' must then be selected to enter marsh grass parameters in the 'Marsh Grass window' (see Figure below). When the 'Plant Type' is selected from the drop-down menu, the Base, Mid, and Top Stem diameters automatically default to FEET units. This is incorrect. The WHAFIS program actually uses INCHES.
The solution to this error is to manually enter Base, Mid, and Top Stem diameters in INCHES in the 'Marsh Grass Card,' as shown below. NOTE: With the release of CHAMP Version 1.1, this error will be eliminated from the program.
